Islam and Ecology: In Search for an Islamic Eco-Theology
Sunday, January 14, 2007

Following right on the heels of our Ghadeer banquet, this event also featured speaker Dr. Hamid Mavani, who spoke on environment and ecology in an Islamic context.  Over the course of the evening, Dr. Mavani answered the following questions and more: What is Islam's perspective towards ecology? Does the spiritual dimension encompass nature as well? What is our responsibility towards the earth before God?

Ghadeer 2007: Our 6th Annual Celebration
Saturday, January 13, 2007

By the grace of All-h [swt], this year's Ghadeer banquet was a smashing success! Building on the success of years prior, this year's banquet featured a lecture by Dr. Hamid Mavani, in addition to an encore - and updated - presentation of the hit play, Children of the Dust.  Good food and good times were had by all, and the festive atmosphere was a welcome departure from the cold outside.  We would like to thank all of the volunteers for their assistance, and all those who attended.  Inshall-h, we look forward to seeing all of you next year!

Muhammad (s): A Mercy Onto the Universe
Saturday, December 9, 2006

In the present day world, the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad al-Mustafa (s) has been depicted erroneous as a messenger of hate. This false portrait is being painted today, on the one hand, by the Danish cartoons and the Pope’s remarks, and on the other, by extremists who act in the name of Islam. Sr. Anita Rai is an eloquent speaker, prolific author, and a former Hindu who later embraced Islam through her profound discovery of Prophet Muhammad (s) and his Ahl al-Bayt (as). She discussed what non-Muslim and Muslim intellectuals have to say about the personality whom all objective observers have affirmed as the greatest leader in the history of humankind.

This event was sponsored by the Thaqalayn Muslim Association of the Greater Toronto Area and Masumeen Youth, in conjunction with Al Fajr Youth and Al Mahdi Youth Society.

TMA @ the Theatre

Our first-ever dramatic outing saw the return of Rajasthani actor Ashwatthama JD to encore his Dora Award-winning performance recounting the Battle of Kerbala and martyrdom of Imam Husein [as] in the 7th century.  Based on a watershed moment in Islamic history, Ek Qatra Khoon - A Drop of Blood is a plea for tolerance and social justice.

The performance was followed by a question-answer session with Ashwatthama JD, hosted by Br. Abbas Panju.  You can watch [and save] this session HERE [WMV, 28mins, 45MB].

2005-2006 EVENTS

5th Annual Ghadeer Banquet
Sunday, January 15, 2006

The Thaqalayn Muslim Association's premiere event of the year was a lavish celebration featuring two compelling speakers and an equally-compelling play.  Professor Robert Campbell and Dr. Talib al-Janabi gave stirring talks on the roles of Imam Ali bin Abu Talib (a.s) as a humanist and reformist, respectively, and the annual TMA play was a powerful, eye-opening account of one man's quest to find Ameerul Moimineen, Ali bin Abu Talib (a.s).  Good times, good food, and good laughs were abound, as we were pleased to witness another successful banquet!
